Jared Paul “$8 Smoothie” VIDEO

Jared Paul “$8 Smoothie” VIDEO

Providence, RI’s Jared Paul comes correct with this anthem track/video about over-priced smoothies. He views the high cost as a symbol of gentrification in the capital city and would rather “kiss a white cop’s boot live on Fox News” than pay that much for something he can make himself at home. The song is off his new album Get My Ghost (on Black Box Tapes – Sole‘s new record label) which can be listened to and purchased on Bandcamp. Get My Ghost is produced by Sacramento engineer & multi-instrumentalist, Tommy Fox. Fox utilizes antique vinyl, analog synthesizers and one MPC to create the record’s dense soundscape. Also it’s not just a Hip Hop album – it’s a documentation of the modern American revolutionary movement, from someone who’s been on the front-lines for over a...
Teacha Returns

Teacha Returns

A Photo-Blog by Jessica Pohl  I am Hip Hop. It’s a phrase I’ve heard for years.  It’s a conversation, a debate, a meeting of the minds, a blending of cultures.  Both the old guard and the new guard of RI Underground Hip Hop have uttered these words at some point.  At times it’s said with pride, but can also be spoken as a challenge.  I am Hip Hop.  Are you? When it comes to KRS-One, there is no debate – he is Hip Hop. He is a teacher, a philosopher, an entrepreneur, a lyricist, an activist, and so many things – but there’s no denying – he is Hip Hop.  Also a member of the Zulu Nation, he has been rocking mics and stages for years both nationally and internationally representing that beautiful golden age of Hip Hop.  He is a true Master of Ceremonies, one of the all-time emcees, he’s a party rocker. You have a lot of opportunities to see amazing music in this small state.  There’s no shortage of it.  It’s everywhere, the RI music scene is flourishing with shows, talent, and opportunities to get out.  But the last time he came to town he drew this awesome crowd. On October 15th you should get out to Simon’s in Providence where KRS will be taking the stage (courtesy of the Keynote Company).  You won’t be disappointed.  His last show was alive with energy.  It was a classic evening of Hip Hop.  From the seasoned openers, to the bboys from Project 401, to the live graffiti, the night played out to be full of energy and alive...

Interview with Sean Price

Interview with Sean Price

Writer’s Note: This interview was done in February of 2014 prior to P’s release of Mic Tyson. RhymeCulture has given me a chance to bring it back. Be sure to catch Sean Price and RA the Rugged Man performing this weekend (8/29/14) at Simon’s 677 in Providence. Locksmith and Prop Anon will also be featured alongside local talent The Dopemen and Grind Mode Generals. Tickets are $17 in advanced and $20 at the door. Some Words with Jesus Price, an Interview. When I had approached Sean Price in 2012 about doing an interview his response was “It’s not some weird shit is it?”. After stumbling over my words for a bit and telling him I worked for 90.3 I was able to convince him otherwise. That weekend I texted P sometime in the afternoon and waited the whole day for a response. I figured he must have been busy. I finally gave in and called, realizing that he gave me his home phone number. I half wish I captured the awkwardness of that conversation when he answered the phone not remembering who the hell I was. This was my first interview ever, so this is no doubt my favorite. Though I’ve only written a few artist interviews, I’ve had a lot of missed opportunities for a number of reasons. I have to appreciate Sean Price the person just as much as the MC for making this my easiest and most interesting interview. We spent time reflecting on what it was like growing up in Brownsville in the 80s, as well as his upcoming work at the time while he geared...
